To learn a foreign language such as English, we first start with familiar vocabulary and speaking. The ability to speak English has been trained since elementary school. In modern times it has a lot of high school students who speak English fluently. That is because the place has opened many English language courses. How children learn different makes understanding between them is not the same. Increasingly compete socially shy making them invisible. Among the students who have been able to speak English some are still having difficulty in speaking English.
As people know that speaking is the major skill in English language and most of people communicate each other by speaking rather than other skills of language. It means that speaking has the important role in our life, especially in language learning. Someone can look from their speaking that has any knowledge or not. In teaching, the teacher know competence student if the student speak their idea, information or opinion about material in teaching learning process.
In this study, researcher uses Qualitative approach that qualitative research refers to an approach which tries to understanding the phenomenon. The researcher chose qualitative research, because in this research will get data base on words from a small number of individuals so that the participants’ views are obtained. Researcher also uses descriptive design. Descriptive study is designed to obtain the information concerning with the status of phenomenon and directed toward determining the natural of the situation as it exists at the time of study. The aim is to describe, “What exist” with respect to two variable or condition in a situation. The researcher chose descriptive design because researcher wanted to know the problem in learning speaking faced as the current phenomenon.
In finding the researcher find some problems in learning speaking faced by the tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Galis that is, inhibition, nothing to say, low participation and mother tongue use. There are two ways to encourage students to overcome their problem. The first one is a way for the teacher to do. It is considered necessary for the teacher to force the students only to speak English during the class. The second solution is for the students themselves. They can have an English conversation club that consists of their own classmates.
