Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing and receiving and processing information (Brown, 1994; Burns & Joyce, 1997). Speaking is so much a part of daily life that we take it for granted. The average person produces tens of thousands of words a day, although some people – like auctioneers or politicians – may produce even more than that. Speaking is one of the basic skills that be mastered by student since it is very important for them to communicate in the class or outside the class.
There are two problem statements in this study. The first one is whether Do the students of Eleventh grade of SMK Miftahul-Qulub Polagan Galis Pamekasan having good vocabulary knowledge, have a good speaking skill. The second one is there any significant effect of using vocabulary mastery to the students speaking skill.
This study is to find out Correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill at eleventh grade of SMK Miftahul Qulub Polagan Galis Pamekasan, and to know how the significant is vocabulary mastery knowledge this study is quantitative research and the design that use in this study is product moment . There are two variables in this study; they are vocabulary mastery as independent variable, and students’ English speaking skill as dependent variable.
In this study, the population of this research is all of students at eleventh grade of SMK Miftahul Qulub Polagan. While the sample is all of students at eleventh grade which consists of 33 students, because this research is population research. Research instrument which are used is test.
The study took place for two weeks, from 15th January - 26th January 2013. The obtained data was analyzed by using r product moment.
The result showed that there is no correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill at eleventh grade of SMK Miftahul Qulub Polagan Galis Pamekasan, and the correlation vocabulary mastery is statistically significant at the level 5%. It is proven that the obtained rtest is lower than rtable (0,325 < 0,2).
Based on the result above, it suggested for English teacher to aid the students to increase their speaking skill by using various technique in teaching speaking. It is suggested for students at SMK Miftahul Qulub Polagan to practice their speaking skill in daily life in order to can speak English well. For further researcher, hopefully the researcher hopes this research will give contribution to the readers in conducting research in English teaching learning process especially in speaking learning.
