Language has important role and function in our lives. It is used as means of communication and expression ideas and feeling also. Grammar is a description of the structure of a language and the way in which unit such as combining word or phrase to make sentence in the language. Writing is nearly the same with speaking. When we have friends or partner that very far or near, we can use letter as instrument of communication, give information, ask information and act. But our writing or our letter must use a rule that grammatically suitable.
There are two problems of this research. The first is Is there any correlation of the grammar understanding in the student’s writing skill at the tenth grade students of MA Al-Ula Ambat tlanakan pamekasan. The second is How far is the correlation of grammar understanding in the student’s writing skill at the tenth grade students of MA Al-Ula Ambat tlanakan pamekasan
The research design of this research is quantitative research by using correlational research. This research has two variable, they are variable X (independent variable) and variable Y (dependent variable). Variable X is Grammar Understanding, and variable Y is students writing skill. The population of this research is at MA Al-Ula Ambat Tlanakan Pamekasan which consist of one class. The number of students at the X class is 20 students. While the sample of this research is class X at MA Al-Ula Ambat Tlanakan Pamekasan that consist of 20 students. The instruments that are uses of this research in collecting data are grammar test and documentation. This research was done 03 may 2014. The research of data analysis used statistical method. The obtained data was analyzed by using product moment formula.
The result of research showed that there is correlation of grammar understanding in the students’ writing skill at the tenth grade students of MA Al-Ula Ambat Tlanakan Pamekasan. It is proven from the result of data analysis that show the value of rxy is higher than rtable (0,863≥0,444) in significant level 5%.
Based on the result above, it is know that there is correlation of grammar understanding in the students’ writing skill at the tenth grade students of MA Al-Ula Ambat Tlanakan Pamekasan. It means that grammar understanding correlation to the students’ writing skill. So, the teacher have increase their english grammar in order that their writing well.
