Teaching is a process transferring of knowledge with several
method that suitable with the material. The teaching process should make
the students active and understand about the material that carried by the
English teacher. In teaching speaking English, the English teacher must
stimulate the learner to speak up when the learner express their idea in
English language. It needs an method in teaching speaking English to
speak by its selves. Self direct learning is an method that can motivate to
speak up in classroom. So, it is a important thing in the teaching speaking
English.
Based on the statement above, there are three problem statements
in this study. Firstly, how the ways to implement of self-direct learning
(SDL) method in teaching speaking English at 11
th
grade students of MA
Al Falah. Secondly, which parts of the implementation of Self-Direct
Learning (SDL) can motivate the students’ activities highly in teaching
speaking English at 11
th
grade of MA Al Falah. Thirdly, how are the
English teacher and the student perception about teaching speaking
English by using Self-Direct Learning (SDL) at 11
th
grade students of MA
Al Falah Dempo Barat Pasean Pamekasan.
The goal of this study is to understand about the implementation of
Self-Direct Learning (SDL) method in Teaching speaking English at 11
th
grade students of MA Al Falah Dempo Barat Pasean Pamekasan, To know
parts of Self-Direct Learning (SDL) which can motivate the students’
activities highly in teaching speaking English at 11
th
of MA Al Falah
Dempo Barat Pasean Pamekasan, and To know the English teacher and the
students perceptions about teaching speaking English by using Self-Direct
Learning (SDL) at 11
th
grade students of MA Al Falah Dempo Barat
Pasean Pamekasan.
In this study used descriptive research because it is word, images,
and it isn’t number. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation,
interview, documentation and questionnaire. The observation of this
research was done from 20
th
till 23
th
May, 2012 at 11
th
grade students of
MA Al Falah. Therefore, the researcher interviews to the English teacher,
giving questionnaire to the students and conducting documentation from
the informant such as: the Profile of MA. Al Falah, the students list name,
lesson plan, etc. After, the researcher collects the data. The researcher
analysis of them base on Miles and Huberman’s model. they are data
reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/ verification.

The result showed that self-direct learning method can motivate to
the students. It is showed by the students participant that makes the student
interested on the teaching speaking process. Beside that, the class becomes
active because all the students participated in these activities. Then, the
students perception that are at 11
th
grade students of MA Al Falah made
the students are happy and enjoyable.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for the English teacher to
teach speaking by using self-direct learning (SDL) in teaching and
learning process but the English teacher should prepare that he want to
implement this method. It is suggested for students. After studying English
subject which used self direct learning method in speaking English
subject, the student can communicate well using a good English that
suitable with the rule of English speaking skill. It is suggested for the next
researcher. The researcher hopes this thesis can be reference to the next
research and the researcher focuses at 11
th
grade students. The researcher
hopes to make the research at 10
th
, 11
th
, and 12
th
grade students so that,
this research is better.
