The Analysis of Moral Values in Hermann Hesse’s Novel “Siddhartha” Based on K. Bertens’ Perspective

Novel is a kind of literatures that is useful for its readers. It can be an entertainment because the readers can enjoy the story or the experiences in the novel. Beside to entertain the readers, reading novel also gives advantage by the moral values that exist in the novel. A novel has moral values that can be learned by the readers. Therefore, the moral values in the novel can be adopted in the readers’ life.
There are two research problems of this study. The first one is what the moral values appear in Hermann Hesse’s novel “Siddhartha” based on K. Bertens’ perspective. The second one is how the moral values appear in this novel based on K. Bertens’ perspective.
The researcher conducts this research to identify and describe the moral values that appear in Hermann Hesse’s novel “Siddhartha”. The perspective of moral value that is used in this research is K. Bertens’ perspective. It is a content analysis by using qualitative approach. Therefore, to collect the data that concerns with moral values, the researcher uses documentation method.
The result of this research shows that the moral values in this novel concern the relation between the father and the son, the attitude toward friends and the other people, and also how to treat a human own self. Those moral values are delivered indirectly. So, the story and the characters’ attitudes are interpreted by the researcher to describe the moral values dealing with the theory of K. Bertens. The moral values in the novel appear by the characters’ attitudes, the dialogues and also the characters’ thoughts.
From this research, it is suggested to the readers of novel to understand the moral values in the novel. So, they can learn and adopt that moral values in their life. Beside that, it is also suggested for the next researcher to analyze this novel from the other values such as social values or religious values. Otherwise, the next researcher can analyze the moral values in this novel by using the other perspective. So, the readers will know the other moral values from different perspective.
