Speaking is the most important skill in English as a foreign language. So that, in the teaching speaking to the students, the English teachers needs good technique to motivate them. One of the appropriate techniques that can be functioned to improve the students’ speaking skill is storytelling technique. This research aims to improve the students’ speaking skill by using storytelling technique.
This research is a quantitative. There are two research problems in this research. First, is there any effect of storytelling technique on students' speaking skill at the fifth grade of SDI Al-Munawwaroh Pamekasan, second, how significance does the storytelling technique effect on students' speaking skill at the fifth grade of SDI Al-Munawwaroh Pamekasan. Based on the two research problems, there are two research objectives. The first, this research is conducted to know the effect of storytelling technique on students' speaking skill, and the second, it is to identify how significance the storytelling technique effect on students' speaking skill at the fifth grade of SDI Al-Munawwaroh Pamekasan.
In order to achieve the objective of this research, the researcher used pre- experimental research namely one group pretest-posttest design. The population of this research was students the fifth grade of SDI Al-Munawwaroh Pamekasan. The sample of this research was students the fifth grade of SDI Al-Munawwaroh Pamekasan especially for C class that containing 30 students. The instruments which were used in conducting the research are test as the main instrument and documentation as supporting instrument. Data analysis technique that researcher used in this research was statistical analysis, the statistical formula which used was t-test which is suitable with the research design namely one-group pretest-posttest design.
The result of this research shows that storytelling technique has effect on students' speaking skill at the fifth grade of SDI Al-Munawwaroh Pamekasan. It is proven with the higher to (t observed)=12,415 than tt (t table) in significant level 5%=2,045. And it also proves that the significant effect of the storytelling technique on students’ speaking skill is 95%, because the researcher takes the significant level of 5%.
Based on the result of this research, it can explain that the storytelling technique is very effective to be implemented in speaking class. It can make the students more active and more self confidence to show their skills. Besides that, The English teachers also have to be more creative in selecting teaching techniques; in order to the students have opportunity to speak well in speaking class.
