The analysis of Cultural Values in Relation to Madurese Culture in Bush’s Encanto Movie

This research begins with the realization for researchers that the
culture we have is increasingly disappearing and being replaced by a new
culture, people are increasingly unfamiliar with the things that the
ancestors did. The existence of a movie that talks about how values exist in
culture, what things are not known are part of our own cultural values,
especially Madurese culture. Knowing and learning culture is not only
from our surroundings, but through awareness that will propagate from
wherever we will start learning it.
Researchers have two focuses in this research. The first is to
analyze the cultural values in the Encanto movie, and the second aims to
find out how the cultural values in the Encanto movie relate to Madurese
cultural values. The researcher used qualitative research with library
research method in her research. In analyzing the content, researchers used
a semiotic approach to collect data to be analyzed. Data is obtained from
watching movies also from scripts that have been downloaded from the
website. Using a semiotic approach to get answers from research on the
Encanto movie.
The result of research focus in this research, there are three
concepts of cultural values: symbols, heroes, and rituals. The first research
focus to find the cultural values in Encanto movie. The researchers found
15 cultural values in Encanto movie, there were 7 cultural values for
symbols, 3 for heroes, and finally 5 for rituals. The second research focus
to find cultural values that related between Encanto movie and Madurese.
The researcher discovered how the characters in this film can perform
cultural values by analyzing the dialogue and physical appearance of the
characters. As a result, the researcher can identify the cultural values
shared by the Encanto film and the Madurese culture.
The researcher finds the cultural values as the same with the first
research focus. The researcher analyzed each character, then the
conversation of each character, and cultural sign in the movie. This
research can serve as motivation for those who are beginning to investigate
the form of culture and the concepts that appear in their own culture in
order to avoid falling into the trap of new cultural colonization, which
results in the fading of the previous culture. There are similarities because
they move like the invisible wind and don't know who started first. So,
there are some parallels between Madurese culture and the Encanto film
because a film is not simply mad; the director must find a city that serves
as inspiration for their film.
