A Morphological Analysis on Derivational and Inflectional Morpheme in Animal Farm Novel by George Orwell

Morpheme, Animal Farm Novel by George Orwell
Morphology is the study of word structure. It means that a word consists of
elements or commonly known as morphemes. The novel Animal Farm is an English
political satire novel by George Orwell. The words contained in this novel can be
analyzed to learn about morphemes. Morpheme is the smallest unit that has
meaning, both lexically and grammatically. The purpose of this research is to find
out about derivational morphemes and inflectional morphemes, as well as affixation
processes found in Animal Farm novel by George Orwell.
This research used qualitative approach with content analysis as the kinds
of research. The main source used is the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell.
While secondary sources are in the form of books and journal articles that are
related to research. In collecting data, researcher used observation and
documentation. To analyze the data, the researcher uses unitizing, sampling,
recording/coding, data reduction, abductive inferring, narrating, and calculating.
The theory used in this research is the theory of Victoria Fromkin, Robert Rodman,
and Nina Hyams.
Furthermore, the result of the first research focus showed that there are 265
words divided into 83 derivations and 182 inflections. The result of the second
research focus showed that the derivational morpheme is classified into 8 processes,
which include: 11 data of noun to adjective, 37 of verb to noun, 21 of adjective to
adverb, 1 of noun to verb, 6 of adjective to noun, 5 of verb to adjective, 1 of noun
to noun, and 1 of adjective to adjective. While the inflectional morpheme data is
classified into 8 processes, which include: 14 data of third person singular, 29 of
past tense, 7 of progressive, 28 of past participle, 91 of plural, 3 of possessive, 5 of
comparative degree, and 5 of superlative degree.
