A Semiotic Analysis of Character Education On A Movie Entitled Turning Red

Turning red (2022) is a movie where meilin lee has to go through being a
teenager with the blessings of her ancestors, when Mei wants to watch a concert,
she is not allowed by her mother, as a child who is required to be perfect Mei
starts doing bad things like lying, raising her tone and leaving silently ". this film
containing bad character, it can affect the teenager or kids, due to teenager in this
era that has a lots of bad atitude and character quality. in this study the aim of this
research is kind of character education that are contained in movie entitled
Turning Red, and to identify Semiotic symbol that are employed in a movie
entitled Turning Red.
This research used Ferdinand De Saussure’s theory of semiotic by using
symbols of gesture, physical sound, expression, and utterance by aspect of
semiotic signifier and signified as an interpretation of the meaning of the symbol
or sign. This research also used qualitative research with a content analysis design
supported by two stages, namely coding and interpretation then conclusions. to
state its validity researchers use triagulation of data sources. The source used in
this research is the movie entitled Turning Red while other source were journals,
books, articles, and previous study that could complete the data.
The result of the present study were contains 8 educational characters which
are, independent, hard work, carying environment, religious, friendship, loving
homeland, appreciation of achivement. character education depicted in this
movie is an education that should be reflected and carried out. The significance of
the study are character education is useful for educating and providing unique
examples as self-building in understanding the meaning of life, we can learn in
any medias such as books, and in this modern era we can learn using film,
television, smarthphone, and others.
