, Analysis Of Total Physical Response Method Applied in Mind Your Language TV Sitcom 1st Episode Season 1

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) is used in several countries. But, the
use of English is not dominant among the people in that country. It is certainly not
easy to learn English especially for people who are very attached to their mother
tongue, because English has its own language structure to form perfect sentences.
So, a method is needed when someone or teachers want to teach languages. Total
Physical Response method is one of the language teaching method that can be
used in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to children, young learners,
and also to adults. As like in Mind Your Language TV Sitcom 1st episode season
2, where the teacher using the Total Physical Response method in giving
explanation to the students. Total physical Response itself is one of language
teaching method that built across the coordination of speech and movement,
where the implementation of this method is used gesture or body movement. The
objective of this research is to know how the Total Physical Response is applied
in the Mind Your Language TV Sitcom 1st episode season 1.
Kind of this research is library research and the researcher uses the
descriptive qualitative approach in conducting this research. There are two
techniques used by the researcher in collecting the data for this research, namely
observation and documentation. The researcher observed the Mind Your
Language TV Sitcom 1st Episode Season 1 by watching it repeatedly in order to
find several scenes that showed the implementation of the Total Physical
Response method, then the researcher captured those scenes and analyze them
using the direct content analysis by matching it with the theories related to the
Total Physical Response method, especially the Jack C. Richards and Theodore S.
Rodgers’s book which discussed approach and methods in language teaching, and
the Total Physical Response method is one of the methods that has been discussed
in that book.
The result of this research is the researcher found 12 scenes that showed
the implementation of the Total Physical Response method in the Mind Your
Language TV sitcom 1st episode season 1. The Total Physical Response method
used by the actors (Mrs. Courtney and Mr. Brown) used when one of the students
difficult to understand the words in English they said, because this show is about
adult college that focused on English as a Foreign Language in which the students
are coming from different countries. As like in minute 00:05:30 when Mr. Brown
told the students to sit in their own chairs using his hands in order to make them
understand when he says “would you all like to sit down!”. The implementation of
the Total Physical Response method in Mind Your Language TV Sitcom 1st
episode season 1 is when the actors (Mrs. Courtney and Mr. Brown) makes a
gesture or body movements in giving explanations, like pointing something with
their hands or make understandable movement by their hands.
