Analysis of Teaching Strategies in Teaching Discipline Used by Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers Movie 2007

Education is also a process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge,
skills, values, morals, beliefs, habits and personal development. In education,
teaching is the process of sharing knowledge and experience. Teaching strategies
are methods and techniques that a teacher will use to support their students through
the learning process. One of the source of teaching strategies can be learnt from a
movie, in this research focus on actor who has role as a teacher in Freedom Writer
movie 2007.
In this context, kind of teaching strategies and teaching discipline become
secondary source on the movie. In this research, there are two research focus
becoming the main idea in this research, first: What are the teaching strategies used
by Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers movie 2007, second: What are the teaching
strategies in teaching discipline used by Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers movie
2007, third: How does Erin Gruwell use the teaching strategies in teaching
discipline in Freedom Writers movie.
This research using qualitative descriptive, library research method and content
analysis are the kind of the research. There are two kinds of source data in this
research, first: primary source, the source data is taken from Freedom Writers movie
2007 as the origin data. The second: kind of teaching strategies and teaching
discipline are the source data of secondary. While the checking of data validity is
using triangulation.
The result of the research shows that; there seven types of teaching strategies used
by Erin Gruwell; 1) Technology Integration in the Classroom, which is radio
became the learning media to take their attention, 2) Behavior management, it was
used to make different class condition by switching seat position, 3) Inquire-based
Instruction, which is belong to discussion related with their life, 4) Independent
Teaching Strategy, which is focus on giving them book to read, 5) Experiential
learning, it was belong to playing game in a line and writing journal, 6)
Visualization, it was handled on museum study, 7) Discussion, that was focus on
making discussion in the class. Besides, there are five types of teaching strategies
in teaching discipline, 1) Behavior management, 2) Inquired-based instruction, 3)
Discussion, Independent teaching strategies, and 5) Visualization. Based on the
finding and explanation above, the research shows how important the role of teacher
in creating students discipline and good behavior that give big impact on their
education and life. It’s also help them in creating a better life education.
