English Vowels Formant Values of the 8th Semester of English Department of State Islamic Institute of Madura: A Vowel Quality Study Using Praat

Formant value is the frequency of natural resonance produced from various
oral and throat cavities. Vowel quality is one vowel sound consideration that
concern with tongue and lip position. By knowing the formant value, the vowel
quality would be known. Researcher uses a software to know the formant value,
namely Praat. Based on these statements, there are two research focus, they are:
First, what are the vowel formant values spoken by the 8th semester of English
department of State Islamic Institute of Madura. Second, how is the vowel quality
of the 8th semester of English department of State Islamic Institute of Madura
based on English native speaker formant value.
Method that the researcher uses in this research is mixed method.
Researcher would like to analyze the result of formant value of the 8th semester of
English department of State Islamic Institute of Madura based on English native
speaker formant value descriptively or by using words and sentence explanation.
After analyzing the English vowels formant values of the 8th Semester of
English Department of State Islamic Institute of Madura, researcher makes
conclusion that: firstly, for the tongue height of vowel sound [i], seventeen
speakers have good tongue position while the other three speakers have not good
enough tongue height position. For the tongue height of vowel sound [ı], nine
speakers have good tongue position while the other eleven speakers have not good
enough tongue height position. Then, ten speakers have good tongue height
position for the vowel sound [ɛ] while the other ten speakers have not good
enough tongue height position. Last, eleven speakers have good tongue height
position for the vowel sound [æ] while the other nine speakers have not good
enough tongue height position. Second, for the tongue advancement of vowel
sound [i], one speaker has good tongue position while the other nineteen speakers
have not good enough tongue advancement position. For the tongue advancement
of vowel sound [ı], one speaker has good enough tongue advancement in
pronouncing vowel sound [ı] while the other nineteen speakers have not good
enough tongue advancement position. Then, three speakers have good enough
tongue advancement in pronouncing vowel sound [ɛ] while the other seventeen
speakers have not good enough tongue advancement position. Last, Four speakers
have good tongue advancement in pronouncing vowel sound [æ] while the other
sixteen speakers have not good enough tongue advancement position
