An Analysis of Code Mixing on Instagram Written by the Fifth Semester of English Students at IAIN Madura

This research focused on the analysis about the types of code mixing on
Instagram written by the fifth semester of English students at IAIN Madura and
the reasons the fifth semester of English students at IAIN Madura used code
mixing on Instagram.
In this research, the researcher uses qualitative approach. The researcher
uses three instruments in collecting the data; observation, interview, and
documentation. For analyzing data the researcher using some steps: first, the
researcher read all of the data that were collected before from the students post on
their Instagram account, then selected the posts. The next step, the researcher
classified and described the types of code mixing used by English students based
on Muysken’s theory such as insertion, alteration and congruent lexicalization.
After that, the researcher explored the reasons why the students written code
mixing on their postings on Instagram. The last, the researcher made conclusion
based on the result of data analysis. And than the researcher uses triangulation of
data source in checking the validity of data.
The data of this research were the students’ posts In Instagram written by
the fifth semester of English students at IAIN Madura. There were 25 posts as
data. The data took from Instagram. The researcher also used interview to know
the reasons why the English students written code mixing.
The result of this research that found by the researcher are: the first, there
are two types of Code Mixing on Instagram used by the fifth semester of English
students at IAIN Madura, namely insertion which 17 data, and alteration which 8
data. Second, there were some reasons why the English students written code
mixing such as because of real lexical need, being emphatic abaout something, to
make more interesting when the readers read the caption, because when used code
mixing on caption it looks so cool, and because followed the trend.
