Analysis on Politeness of Please and Thank You used by Batuampar People Guluk-Guluk Sumenep in Perspective of Janet Holmes

Politeness in language through the use of the word please and thank you used
by Batuampar people Guluk-Guluk Sumenep some of them sometimes forget to use
the word please when they need help from others, as well as the word of thank you
some people sometimes forget to use the word thank you when they get help from
others. Even some of them use the word thank you more than the word please in their
daily activities. Some of them besides being found not using and forgot the use of the
word please and thank you, some of them were also found to lack appreciate in the
use of the word please and thank you. This is why politeness is difficult to learn in
any language.
Based on this, there are two focuses in this study, first is how to use the words
please and thank you in Batuampar people Guluk-Guluk Sumenep and the second is
how to use the words please and thank you in perspective of Janet Holmes.
In this study, researcher used qualitative as a research approach with a
descriptive type of research. The data will be described in descriptive form without
statistical processing. The data source is the people of Batuampar Guluk-Guluk
Sumenep. In collecting data, researcher used two research procedures, namely
interview and documentation. The researcher then analysis the data by sorting out the
results of the interview.
The results of this study indicate that: first, some Batuampar people often use
the words please and thank you in their daily activities, but some of them who are
there sometimes not using and forgot to use the word please and thank you. Some of
them use the word thank you more than the word please in their daily activities. Even
so, some of them were also found to lack appreciate in the use of the word please and
thank you. Second, the results of the field prove that the word please and thank you
are used by Batuampar people to express politeness. But some of them were also
found to lack appreciate in the use of the word please and thank you. This is why
politeness is difficult to learn, because polite communication not only understands
language, but also understands the social and cultural values of society.
