THE STUDY OF TENGGELAMNYA KAPAL VAN DER WIJCK FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF LITERATURE AND ISLAMIC ETHICS

Literature is thinking process or as product of human creativity of art, like
novel. Novel is one branch of literature created. By reading novel the reader is able
to get knowledge and experience about the content of the novel. The researcher
chooses novel of “Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck” by Buya Hamka. Firstly,
the researcher thinks that this novel is very unique and interesting novel than others.
Because the writer of this novel (Buya Hamka) is a critic of Indonesian literature
and Buya Hamka has good intention to criticize some traditions that have done by
society at the time, especially about “Forced marriage”. And since this novel was
published it has continued to experience reprinting until now and has become
mendatory reading material for school students in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Secondly, because this novel reflects the person’s real life and this is really
happening in a long time ago. Thirdly, the researcher will know more about the
perspective literature. So, the researcher will know about the element of the novel
( intrinsic and extrinsic element ) and Islamic ethics of the novel. Fourth, the
researcher thinks that by studying the Islamic ethics or moral values in the novel is
a very important thing and it is relevant with the attitude and how to be a good
people or educates people in this era.
Based on the explanation above, there are 2 research focus of this research,
they are: What is the elements of Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck? and What
are the Islamic ethics on Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck ?
This research is acquired by using objective approach in literary work.
Because in this case, the researcher focuses on the object of this research is the
elements and Islamic ethics from the novel of Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck.
Then this study uses descriptive analysis method, is used to describe the result of
the data. While the kind of this research is library research that the researcher will
choose intrinsic and extrinsic elements and also the Islamic ethics from the novel.
The result of this research shows that elements of the novel (intrinsic and extrinsic
elements) and Islamic ethics that concern with the content of the novel and appear
from the characters' attitudes, the dialogue and the characters' thoughts.
From this research, it is suggested to the readers of the novel to understand
the elements and Islamic ethics. So, they are able to learn and adopt that elements
and Islamic ethics in their life. Besides that, it is also suggested for the next
researcher to analyze this novel from the other aspects, such as: moral value, social
value and others element. Otherwise, the next researcher is able to analyze the
element and Islamic ethics in this novel by using the other perspective. So, the
readers will know the other elements and Islamic ethics from different perspective.
