ANALYSIS OF INTERNET SLANG USED BY THE 5TH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AT IAIN MADURA ON INSTAGRAM 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR

Language is a tool of communication used by humans by means certain
interests and purposes. When talking to strangers or older people we usually use
formal language whereas when talking to friends or relatives we commonly use
informal language. In connection with this, slang is one of the informal languages
that generally used by teenagers which is frequently can be found on social media
especially Instagram as one of the most popular social media in the millennial era.
From the above phenomenon, the researcher wants to know the slang
languages written by TBI students in 5th semester of IAIN Madura through
caption on Instagram and the forms of slang internet they use.
In this case the researcher used descriptive qualitative approach in
conducting research while for the method the researcher used observation and
documentation in collecting the data. In data analysis, the researcher used data
identification, data classification, data description, and conclusions. To check the
validity of the data, the researcher used technical/ methods triangulation.
The results of this research showed that there are twenty three internet
slangs used by the 5th semester of English department students on Instagram
which only belong to five forms out of ten existing internet slang forms, by
explanation four students using the acronym form, five forms of word clipping,
one form of onomatopoeia, ten forms of pronunciation of form, and three others
using similarity of sound forms.
Finally, the researcher concluded that there are not so many English
department students wrote captions using internet slang on Instagram and the
forms of internet slang that they used were also not too varied. From this research,
the researcher suggested to the readers and Instagram users to use internet slang
wisely and responsibly. And for further researchers who are examining similar
study, the researcher hopes to discuss different points of view about internet slang.
