STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS ON SELECTING GRAMMAR MATERIALS IN DESIGNING SYLLABUS IN ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP) OF THE FIFTH SEMESTER STUDENTS AT IAIN MADURA

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a subject of English as a second or foreign language where the goal of the learner is to use English in a particular domain based on designing courses to meet learners’ need. ESP is one of the subjects of TBI in the fifth semester. Designing syllabus and making units/books is a task given by lecturer to students. Selecting grammar materials is a problem faced by fifth-semester students of TBI to designing syllabus on ESP subjects.
There are two research focuses on this research. The first, students’ problems on selecting grammar materials in designing syllabus of ESP subject at the fifth-semester of IAIN Madura. The second, the solutions to overcome the students’ problems on selecting grammar materials in designing syllabus of ESP subject at the fifth-semester of IAIN Madura.
The researcher used a qualitative approach with descriptive as the kind of research. The researcher collects the data from observation, documentation, and interview then checked and analyzed the results of the students' assignments on selecting grammar material in designing the syllabus of ESP subject by qualitative analysis: data reduction, data display, and verification.
The results of this study, many students said that they felt difficulties and were confused in selecting grammar material while designing the syllabus. They feel difficult when adjusting the material to the students' level/class, difficulties in adjusting the material to basic competencies, students are confused to determine what grammar material is in designing a syllabus that is suitable to be taught in class XI Vocational Schools and must adjust to the basic competencies that have been made before. The last, students feel confused when they have to put special terminology with material that has been chosen before because of the foreign terminology they do not know and lack of references. Based on the problem, the TBI students asked teacher/senior, look for references and sources about ESP especially in understanding the grammar material and basic competencies to be achieved.
The suggestion for the students must read a lot, especially in ESP material to increase their knowledge and vocabulary. Also must be active and creative, ask more questions or share with friends who know better and ESP lecturers. For the lecturer, always guide and motivate students especially those who have problems in grammar etc. so that they can learn better than before and they can be more creative in designing the syllabus.
