Writing is one of English skill which must be undergone by all levels in education world. The higher the education that student gets more difficult writing theory that will be gotten by them. The case also happens in STAIN. TBI students in STAIN Pameksana obtain writing theory until they are able to write an essay in the fifth semester. There are many cases which will influence the result of their writing. One of the things which influence the students writing is topic familiarity.
Then the researcher made is research has two main problems, they are, does topic familiarity give effect to the TBI students writing essay of fifth semester in TBI STAIN Pamekasan and is there any statistically significant effect from the topic familiarity to the TBI students writing essay of fifth semester in TBI STAIN Pamekasan, because topic familiarity may also influence the produce of the college students writing essay.
In this research, the researcher used quantitative research approach exactly non experimental research design, population of this research are TBI STAIN students of fifth semester that consist of 178 students and also as the sample of this research are 28 students of TBI STAIN students in fifth semester or 15% of the population is more than 100 students. The instruments used in collecting data are questionnaire, test and documentation. The technique of data analysis used statistical analysis that refers to the product moment analysis.
The result of this research showed that using topic familiarity to the students writing essay of fifth semester in TBI STAIN Pamekasan does not give effect. It is proven from the result of the data analysis and hypotheses test which showed that there is no effect of topic familiarity to students writing essay of fifth semester in TBI STAIN Pamekasan by the result of correlation is 0,082. The result is lower than r table that is determined or (r_xy-value< r-table : 0,082 < 0,374). So, this research rejected (H_a) and accepted (H_0).
Based on the result above, the researcher suggests that college student must have good ability in all components in writing so that as college student, they able to write a good text or essay and for lecturer must care about their student’s ability in writing. The lecturer is expected to aid their students in increasing their student’s ability in writing.
