Teacher has significant roles in teaching and learning process. Their roles do not stop as an instructor in the class but the students look to teachers as parents in some cases, counselors in some cases, and teachers take those roles on because they really know these students. Whereas, the students put some qualities of their teacher based on these requirements; who makes the course interesting, teach with a good pronunciation, shows the same interest in all students, shows great practice, and makes the students’ work.Therefore, I take the topic of “The role of English teacher in teaching speaking at first grade in SMP Negeri 1 Tlanakan Pamekasan.
There are two research focuses in this study. The first, how is the role of English teacher in teaching speaking at first grade in SMP Negeri 1 Tlanakan Pamekasan. The second, what kind of program that the English teacher construct in teaching speaking at first grade in SMP Negeri 1 Tlanakan Pamekasan.
In this research, the researcher uses qualitative approach. While kind of research, the researcher uses descriptive research. Because the researcher describes the role of English teacher in teaching speaking at first grade in SMP Negeri 1 Tlanakan Pamekasan.
The result of this research found that the role of English teacher in teaching speaking at first grade in SMP Negeri 1 Tlanakan Pamekasan, teachers in schools are not only required to teach only to their students but teachers also need to know the character of each student, which focusing on how they learn a new language. Then, in teaching a new language focusly on foreign language, it should has some ways of teaching so that they their strategy. Every English teachers here have programeed various teaching methodologies as memorizing vocabularies, group discussion, re-write or retype the materials.
Based on the result of research above, the researcher can conclude that the role of English teacher in teaching speaking at first grade in SMP Negeri 1 Tlanakan Pamekasan is very important in teaching speaking to make the students speak up in the class.
